The 5* Villa Real Hotel building is a classic in Madrid. Built at the end of the 20th century and designed by the renowned architect Fernando Chueca Goitia, it was acquired by Derby Hotels Collection in 1996 to become a small museum hotel that perfectly embodies art and elegance.
Its fascinating Art and Archeology collection brings together a selection of perfectly restored mosaics from the Roman period and of Syrian origin, dated between the 2nd and 6th centuries AD. A catalogue of more than 100 pieces of ancient art, distributed throughout the hotel lounges, corridors, common areas and rooms.
CLASSICAL GREECE AND THE ROMAN EMPIRE
Several Roman sculptures from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD are of particular note, as well as some ancient mosaics from the early Christian period, and a collection of Apulian vessels from Magna Graecia, belonging to one of the most important private collections in Spain.
Contemporary painting can also be enjoyed at the 5* Villa Real Hotel with a collection of works by Joan Guinovart, Antoni Tàpies and Andy Warhol, the latter inspiring the decor of the East 47 Bar.
In addition to being a hotelier, Jordi Clos is an Egyptologist, collector and patron of the arts. He chairs the Clos Archaeological Foundation and the Egyptian Museum in Barcelona, containing the largest private collection of Egyptian art in Europe shown to the public. Jordi Clos has been financing archaeological excavations in Egypt for more than twenty years.
